Interfacility Transfer (IFT) is dependent on a disjointed patchwork of personnel and agencies, often working without coordination or a common platform of communication. Some of the key issues include IFT infrastructure, matching demand to capacity in an overburdened system, and improving effective use of limited transfer assets (e.g. ACLS ambulance). Many hospitals lack dedicated support staff to facilitate transfers. Lost clinician productivity while arranging transfers adds up - it's multiple calls, hold times, failed connections, capacity issues, and restarted inquiries. The cycle is often repeated if the first hospital does not have capacity or capability to care for the patient.
